New Directions

Thanks to the help of new interns at SpaceShare, we're headed in some new directions. Michael Smith, a new outreach intern, has generated lists of allies including transportation organizations, peace activists, and music festival websites. Mary Kohut, our new media intern, is creating PR for these organizations to get the SpaceShare name out to the world!

New Interns

Michael Smith: Full time intern until the end of July. Although currently based in Berkeley, I am a student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I study Spanish, but am minoring in Environmental Studies and that is what attracts me to SpaceShare.

I am mostly working as a contact person to find and work with SpaceShare's allies. I hope to do some publicity for SpaceShare at the same time. Through these allies, I will have a better idea of how environmental organizations function, and, perhaps, even make permanent contacts with people at these organizations. As I look towards my future, contacts I have made during my tenure at SpaceShare will perhaps lead to a future career direction. Overall, I hope to find larger implications in sustainability issues and use what I have learned at SpaceShare to improve my education and knowledge of sustainability.

Currently, I am working on allies and outreach -- trying to get the SpaceShare name out to as many like-minded organizations as possible. Have any ideas? E-mail me. Also feel free to check out what I'm working on over on the new community site.

Mary Kohut: My job here is to manage media; writing, editing, submitting, and researching new outlets for us to get our name out there! I want to learn about the PR end of nonprofit organizations, which is where I'd like to head career-wise. I also want to get my name in with local media outlets in order to set myself up for California media work upon graduation in a year with a degree in Journalism with a concentration in Global Studies.

For the planet...Green ethics have been an integral part of my upbringing and I want to learn methods of greening at the business level. Individuals can only do so much, we need social responsibility coming down from the top.

For myself...I'm excited to work on a growing team, while familiarizing myself with the Bay Area. I'm an East Coast kid testing how much I like the scene out here, and how much I like doing more PR-style work (usually it's straight, objective journalism).

SpaceShare adds to the Harmony

We've done it again! SpaceShare helped neighbors tune into each other for this year's Health and Harmony Festival, June 9, 10, and 11 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. We've built a rideshare system for Harmony before, but our work doesn't stop there.

Peter, Mary, Judah, Rachel and Stephen attended the festival, spoke with families, single travelers, music heads, and more, informing folks about our services and the benefits of green travel (and camped out and partied). The five of us who went also enjoyed sampling some fine all-organic juice by our supportive sponsor, Columbia Gorge Organic Fruit Company.

As folks enjoyed their juice and were introduced to SpaceShare, they also were encouraged to use our paper rideboard, set-up for the rest of the festival.  And we had fun too!

Festival Season Continues, Join Us!

 See the list at http://www.spaceshare.com/upcoming.

We're especially looking for help as we expand geographically: we need more hands at Lightning in a Bottle June 14-16 near Santa Barbara, and possibly the Oregon Country Fair or FaerieWorlds in Oregon, and a sofa to crash on in Denver in late August.

Community

Do you want to be a part of SpaceShare?  These newsletters aren't enough for you to understand the heart of our community?  Want to volunteer, or you were a volunteer and want to get more deeply involved?  SpaceShare is passing another milestone as it continues to transform from a one-person project into a community.  David, our technology intern, has been diligently transforming spaceshare.com/community into our organizational hub.  Check out the site, introduce yourself, and look at the forums where we plan our next steps.  Roles vary, from joining as a partner to occassionally proofreading a website.  We're a "Do It Yourself" organization, looking for participants rather than donors.   Come join us!

If you think SpaceShare is a worthwhile project and want to see it happen, our community site is the place to be.

Dream & Create,
Stephen Cataldo, Michael Smith, Mary Kohut, and the rest of the SpaceShare team...
